PostSubject: My Guardian   Fri Nov 09, 2012 6:30 pm

Introduction
This is my new and updated build that I have been running for the last few months.  I use this build because it provides diversity for both PvE and WvW without the hassle of changing traits.  This build is a variation on the popular AH guardian build but I have found it to be more versatile when switching from WvW to PvE.

Long Story Short

PvE Build <--Link
You can change the traits in the Virtues line depending on the situation.

WvW Build <--Link
The same as above.  Everything can be changed for your situation. (I.E. Roaming, zerging etc.)

Short Story Long
I will not go into too much depth as to the strategy of how to run a guardian but will instead focus on how to run this particular guardian in popular areas/situations for both PvE and WvW.

Gear
PvE Gear: Knights armor with Runes of the Soldier. Berserker Trinkets.  Berserker weapons (I also have a set of knight weapons to swap out).  The weapons I prefer are Hammer and Scepter/Focus.
WvW Gear: Knights armor with Runes of Melandru.  Berserker Trinkets (Knights trinkets ready on swap). Berserker Weapons (Hammer and Staff for zerging, Hammer and Scepter/Focus or Scepter/Shield for roaming.)

Utility Skills

PvE Skills: "Stand Your Ground", "Hold the Line", "Retreat", Hollowed Ground, Wall of Reflection, and on rare occasions Shield of the Avenger.

Use these skills as needed.   I usually have the three shouts on my bar but if I know stability or reflections are needed I change them out.  "Retreat" is usually the first to be changed out.

WvW Skills: For Zerging: "Stand Your Ground", Wall of reflection, Sanctuary.
For Roaming: "Stand Your Ground", "Hold the Line", and either "Retreat", "Save Yourselves", or Wall of reflection.

Traits and Trait Points.
Trait points for both PvE and WvW are 0/0/30/20/20

PvE Trait Skills:
Valor: Strength in Numbers (IV), Retributive Armor(VI), Altruistic Healing(XI).  You probably already run this on your guardian.

Honor: Superior Aria(II), Empowering Might(VIII).  I do not trait for symbols anymore because a normal size symbol in most PvE circumstances will effect those who need it (I.E. Frontline.).  Also the normal symbol has a larger radius than the graphic for the symbol would lead you to believe.

Virtues: Master of Consecrations(VI), Indomitable Courage(X).  You can change IC(X) for Improved Spirit Weapon Duration(V) in the case you are using Shield of the Avenger.  It is also important to note that IC(X) provides stability for all party members, not just yourself.

WvW Trait Skills:
Valor: Everything is the same but change Strength in Numbers(IV) for Purity(V).  Most guardians will have SiN(IV) and it doesn't stack thus becoming useless.

Honor: Writ of Exaltation(III), Two-Handed Mastery(IX).  In WvW Symbol size is important because I wield a hammer and a staff.  For the hammer auto-attack it is important to tag as many foes as possible. And for the staff to have a large ranged symbol for both tagging and speed buffs.

Virtues: Master of Consecrations(VI), Absolute Resolution(IX).  Conditions are a big deal in WvW thus being able to quickly remove them with virtue of resolve is a big plus. MoC(VI) should be self explanatory.

Conclusion
I have tried to keep this simple and short.  There is a lot of advanced applications of this build but I would rather not create another wall of text as my last build did.  I would say keep in mind minor traits for the guardian when you run this build.  It has a lot of boons from the virtues line which keeps your health going up.  Some people may complain about the loss of health from the honor line but the HP loss is negligible and with that the loss of symbol traiting could be an area of complaint.  I assure you, both are not major losses.

If you have any questions just ask me in game.

Thanks for reading Mitch I appreciate it! Remember this is for balanced guardians, not bunkers. My guardian reflects my playstyle more than anything. I want to be able to do farms and events on my own while still being able to act as a tank when we do guild runs in dungeons etc.

On another note I just added "The Application." Next to come is some strategy talks.

Also if anyone has some concerns or critiques I'm completely open to them.

I figured that sentance would be confusing. But my point is if you increase health you have the freedom to take damage. If you increase toughness traits you can take more hits because the damage dealt to you is smaller. Also I hate writing.

Very thorough explanayion of a guardian, I may give my guardian another go, wasnt too impressed with the way I was playing it.

Right now I am trying to give a mesmer a fair trial, but at lvl 20 she is still squishy Sad

I had very little trouble getting an ele, a ranger and a thief to lvl 80, the rest of the professions are failing to keep my interest :/

This is very awesome. I haven't got the chance to play my Guardian much, but I will get to him at some point!

What would you guys says about a Profession forum board to discuss builds about various professions? Would be nice to have to keep things organized and I'd love to share what my experiences with my Mesmer have been so far and to read about what others have experienced with the professions they have played.

Though this can probably wait until we get lots more builds on the forums!

Is this still your exact build? I'd be interested to see an update - I'm always curious about other people's guardian builds.

Actually this is fairly outdated. I was going to rewrite this the other day but decided not to. I guess I'll give it a go over the weekend.

How do you feel about 15 radiance guardians using Justice is Blind/Blind Exposure/Renewed Justice?  I hear that one a lot.

I used to run that but i feel it is inadequate compared to the build i run now.  Blind is a good condition but the rate at which 15 in radiance applies it is not good for higher level areas.  On top of that leap of faith is more reliable from greatsword with a 12sec CD if you spec in 2 handed mastery. The vulnerability on blind is meh. only 3 stacks per blind.  A warrior or ele traited to lay down vuln will apply a lot more and more effectively.  Though at least 5 in radiance is really good on high level ascalonian/charr fractals.  You can pop the blind on the warriors before they spike you.

15 radiance is kinda good tho, keep trash permablind is always nice.. And leap of faith on gw can stack 15 vuln if mobs are balled up...

30 radiance on the other hand that's when we start talking... Combine it with a sword and 10 in honor for fiery wrath and your DPS will be on par or above warriors...
People need to drop the tanky guardians and actually start doing some DPS, you wouldn't bring a healing shout war on your dungeon runs, so why bring a guard specced the same way Razz

At this point we're talking about two different guardian builds with completely different applications.  How about posting what you use, Ben?

Sure cause the shout changes function when u switch to DPS and doesn't provide the same boons anymore...

And I'm talking about the x/30/0/30/x where the last 10 goes depending if you need DMG or projectile reflection..

I reiterate my previous statement, you are arguing your build (mostly offensive) in the context of Skittle's build (mostly defensive) and that is an invalid comparison.

Ben's build differs from this one by sacrificing personal survivability (mainly Altruistic Healing) in return for increased damage from Radiance. It still retains most of the team support that people seem to value most from a guardian.
The question here is whether you want your guardian to live longer or do more damage - it's very much a risk vs reward thing. I think this is a great deal more complicated than "should I wear knight's or berserker's on my warrior?", since the guardian's damage increase is not that noticeable, whilst they are extremely squishy without any defensive traits. However, if you're confident that you can stay alive running what Ben does, there's no good reason not to.

Misty is pretty much spot on.. Where the DPS increase isn't really as big as for wars it deals almost twice as much DMG as the AH build.. And retains the same boon duration and if traited the cd on consec...

30 in radiance is just awful  you are losing 300 toughness n 30 crit dmng a bunch of sustain from ah for a blind to go with f1 and the ability to spam it with trash mobs.  You are also losing boon dura and retal every time you use a virtue by not having 20 in virtues buts that's not as bad as wasting 30 in radiance.

guards offensive traits are pretty shitty compared to the defensive traits they have, if you want dps get it from equip and foods

For wvwvw I agree with you. Ah is pretty nice there especially with empower. And the 10% more boon is also useful
But pve? I have a hard time seeing where you need any kind of sustain if you got a decent DPS focused party but if you got a team with low DPS, AH is a better choice. A blind at the right time can save your whole party.  And retaliation in PvE? Lol what..
And calling radiance bad is just funny. 30% crit chance and perma +15% dmg, blind on demand and extra might and vulnerability.. If you call that bad I'm not sure what could classify as good.. +30 crit DMG from the other trait like isn't even close to as good. And food and wrenches should almost always increase your DPS, don't want to take DMG start dodging..

And I'm not telling everyone to run this build but it's a nice change from the lower DPS AH build most guardians cause "tanking" gets boring after a while..
